Weston: We have a chance to go up

Rhys Weston today claimed Walsall have never had a better chance of promotion while he's been at the club – as he prepares to make his 100th appearance.

The right-back is primed to achieve his century at Millwall on Saturday with the Saddlers eighth in League One, a point adrift of the play-offs after just four defeats in 16 league games.

A win at their 10th-placed hosts could see them jump into the top six and Weston says they have never had a better chance of promotion during his time at the Banks's Stadium.

"We've had a decent run and it's as good a chance since I've been at the club," said the 29-year-old.

"If we keep as many players as we can fit there's no reason why we can't mount a serious challenge.

"We've got to be realistic, it's going to be difficult but the manager and Martin (O'Connor, assistant) have instilled belief into the squad that we are good players.

"There's more confidence but I wouldn't confuse it with complacency because we've won some games without playing well. We've said for weeks we're not far from being a good team."

And Weston believes Chris Hutchings' men can thrive on being slapped with an underdog tag.

He said: "I don't think we're under pressure. We're not being touted as promotion favourites like Leeds, Charlton and Norwich."

If anything we can go and enjoy it and give a good account of ourselves.

"We haven't been put under any pressure from any angle really. We're always going to have critics – everyone does - but it's a case of doing what we need to do and keep believing in what we're trying to achieve."

If the former Arsenal defender plays on Saturday it will be his century for the Saddlers and he revealed his pride with the achievement – although would like more goals after one solitary strike.

"I'm averaging one in 99 games so that's not a bad strike rate," he joked.

"It's come around quickly, it's a nice milestone and I'm really proud.

"When I came to Walsall I came off the back of a difficult year but I've managed to play 99 games and I've now filled the void which was there before."
