Walsall striker Sam Parkin has vowed to grab his big chance if chosen to lead the line.

The forward scored in the reserves' 1-1 draw with Burton yesterday and could deputise for the suspended Troy Deeney at Millwall on Saturday.

Alex Nicholls is also in the running to partner Darren Byfield, but Parkin has declared himself ready.

He said: "I won't let anyone down. I'll be raring to go and be very enthusiastic about getting my chance.

"The manager will go whichever way he thinks best and if I'm included it's my opportunity to do well.

"It was a bit scrappy yesterday but it's another goal and I've been scoring recently so hopefully I've done enough."

Parkin has netted three in his last five first team and reserve outings, while Nicholls grabbed a brace in the 3-3 draw with Albion's second string two weeks ago.

The 28-year-old knows it's a straight fight between the pair for the striking berth and hopes his recent goals will help his chances.

He said: "That's all you can do. Through my career I've scored on a regular basis. I've done OK at certain times this year, but I want to get back into the first team and hopefully it will be me on Saturday.

"Whoever goes in will have to do their best to try and stay in, but the manager picks the team."

The Saddlers, who sit eighth, know a win could see them move into League One's top six, although defeat would see their tenth- placed hosts leapfrog them.

But the New Den has been a happy hunting ground for Parkin, where made his professional bow there in a 5-0 romp against Oxford while on loan from Chelsea in 2000.

He said: "I made my debut at Millwall and scored two against Oxford. I've got really happy memories and they've always been good to me. Whenever I've bumped into fans they've been great.

"I was only there a few months but they're very good memories. I've done well against them, I scored a winning goal for Ipswich and enjoy playing there. If I play hopefully it'll go as well again."
