Albion target Gabriel Tamas will be available for £2.3m in January, it was claimed today.
Sources in Romania suggest the international centre-back will be free to move in the winter transfer window provided a buyer meets the 2.5 million euros asking price.
French club Auxerre, who own Tamas's registration, would pocket £1.4m with Dinamo Bucharest claiming £900,000 for cancelling the 25-year-old's season-long loan.
Albion have monitored the colourful Romania international for several months with head coach Roberto Di Matteo making a personal check on him during the recent international break.
But the Baggies initially enquired about a loan deal to sign the former the former Galatasary, Spartak Moscow and Celta Vigo star and Hawthorns officials would need to be convinced to agree to a permanent transfer.
Assistant head coach Eddie Newton said: "We're looking for January and we just have to make sure we bring in the right personnel."
Reports in Romania suggesting Albion are also pursuing Tamas' team-mate Lucian Goian are believed to be wide of the mark.
Albion are, however, set to welcome Icelandic striker Alfred Finnbogason for a trial in the near future.
The 20-year-old plays for Icelandic club Breidablik and is currently on trial with Belgian club Genk.
He is also set to train with Norwegian club Viking and Malmo, of Sweden.
