Hutchings tells players to wise up

Walsall manager Chris Hutchings has told his players they must wise up after their draw with Carlisle.

Richard Keogh's 90th minute equaliser denied Walsall back-to-back home wins, after Steve Jones and Darren Byfield had put them 2-1 ahead.

Matt Robson scored the Cumbrians' first equaliser a minute before the break, after Dwayne Mattis had lost the ball.

The Saddlers boss reckons his charges need to be more intelligent when they are in possession.

He said: "You want your players to show confidence, but it's knowing the right areas of the pitch to play in at times.

"The wrong area was late on in the first-half when we conceded and you've got to know when to play and where to play.

"Jamie Vincent played inside, then Dwayne's tried to play a square ball in the middle of the park which has got cut out, so the boy's gone in and finished it well.

"We should be doing better than that a couple of minutes before half-time, we should be getting it and just turning them really.

"We went in front and scored a decent goal but it wasn't a classic by any means."

But Hutchings conceded a draw was a fair result even thought the Saddlers slipped to 12th in League One.

He said: "What goes around comes around. It feels like it's two points dropped because we conceded so late on, maybe if they'd have scored halfway in the half we might feel a little bit different.

"We were lucky enough to get the three points on Tuesday night, scoring so late on, and Huddersfield may have felt the same way. Perhaps a draw was a fair result. You've got to defend for 90 minutes. It was disappointing conceding so late on."

Hutchings was happy with a point even if he felt they should have held on at 2-1.

He said: "The only thing we can be pleased about is that we got a point out of it,. In the second-half we created a few chances when we went 2-1 up and should have put it to bed.

"I'm disappointed with the goal that we conceded. "

The manager has now targeted another unbeaten run as he looks to build on four points from the last two home games.

He said: "It's a pity we didn't get three points because we'd be another three or four places up the league, but let's hope it's the start of another run."
