Walsall manager Chris Hutchings hailed Darren Byfield as key to the Saddlers season - as it was revealed he could have played against them on Saturday.

The striker netted his second goal in two games in the 2-2 draw with Carlisle, as United boss Greg Abbott confirmed trying to sign Byfield before his return to the Banks's Stadium.

But the 33-year-old instead grabbed his third of the season against the Cumbrians and Saddlers boss Hutchings is delighted.

The manager said: "Darren is a goalscorer. We know that. He needs to stay fit, he needs to stay sharp and he's going to be a handful for any defence."
