Walsall defender Rhys Weston has admitted he faces the fight of his life to keep his place.

The right-back replaced Darryl Westlake in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Huddersfield, after being kept on the bench for eight games.

Weston, who had been out of the starting line-up since his sending off against Accrington last month, is set to retain his place at home to Carlisle on Saturday - but knows his teenage rival could replace him any time.

The 28-year-old said: "I stated openly last season he'll be one to watch out for. I said it would be a direct battle between him and me for a right-back spot and it's turned out like that. I was stupidly sent off at Accrington and I paid the price.

"Darryl is a fantastic player and can go a very long way in the game. All I can do is keep training well and when given the opportunity try to take it.

"He's been very impressive and for the team's sake long may it continue."

The pair enjoy a friendly rivalry and Weston insists if rookie Westlake needs advice he will happily give it.

He said: "If he wants to talk to me I'm always there, but I'm trying to refrain from kicking him in training at the moment!"
