Loan star Clayton McDonald aims to get one over boyhood hero John Barnes when Walsall travel to Tranmere.

The young defender, who joined from Manchester City for a month last week, grew up as a Liverpool fan and Rovers boss Barnes was one of his idols.

But the 20-year-old insists there will be no room for sentiment at Prenton Park on Saturday, as the Saddlers continue to look for their first victory since the opening day.

McDonald said: "I am a Liverpool fan. Barnes was a flair player, he could do mad things with the ball, beat two or three players and put it in the top corner. He was class.

"But being in football you don't really watch your boyhood team much – you are more worried about the team you are playing for.

"The way I've been brought up I go to every ground to win. Even if my dad was the manager of the other team I'd want to beat him. As long as my team wins that's all I care about.

"A draw would be OK but we want to win, we want three points, we want goals and we want clean sheets.

"Shaleum Logan, one of the lads from Manchester City, is on loan there so we've already had a bit of banter about the game."
