Boss still backing his boys

Chris Hutchings today insisted he still had confidence in his misfiring Walsall side despite being dumped out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The Saddlers lost 5-4 on penalties to Bury in the first round last night after it finished 0-0 in normal time at the Banks's Stadium.

Sam Parkin missed the first spot-kick before the Shakers scored all five as the Saddlers bowed out of the competition to lower league opposition for the second season running.

But manager Hutchings says he has belief in his team – despite a third successive game without a goal. He said: "I have got confidence in the boys. I have got no doubts about their ability."

Hutchings has been dealt a further blow with the news that skipper Mark Hughes is sidelined for at least another week. Hughes injured his hip in training last week, missing the last two matches, and he has been ruled out of Saturday's trip to Norwich. "Hopefully he will be available for the following week," said the boss.
