Saddlers spring a surprise for boss

Walsall manager Chris Hutchings believes his side could sneak through the promotion backdoor and become surprise challengers this season.

The Saddlers are classed as rank outsiders to mount any promotion challenge with Norwich, Leeds and Charlton the overwhelming favourites in the race for the Championship.

But the Banks's chief reckons being underdogs will suit his side and added there is nothing to stop them being shock contenders when they start their League One season at Brighton on Saturday.

He said: "We don't mind being out of that little equation as long as we do the job. There's always someone who sneaks through unaware, but you don't necessarily want to sneak through – you want to get off to a flier and be there from the start.

"Only time will tell, but there's always someone who does well, whether it be under budget or a small club, maybe with a small fanbase. Why can't we do well? There's no reason why we can't.

"But you need a slice of luck and if you have too many injuries at one time that can cost you."

Hutchings, who will start his first full season in charge at the Withdean, vowed to make the Saddlers supporters proud of their club after a turbulent campaign last year.

He said: " For me personally along with the players, the club and the supporters - it's a big season."
