The left-footer joins after a successful trial with the Saddlers, scoring in the 2-2 draw with Albion last week.

He becomes Chris Hutchings' seventh summer signing and is set to make his debut at former club Brighton in the League One curtain raiser on Saturday.

The 24-year-old and Parkin played together at Ipswich in 2005/06 and the new-boy has told of his old team-mate's role in his move.

Richards said: "It was Sam Parkin who initially put my name forward here. I've been here a few weeks and it has gone well.

"As a trialist you have to work hard to impress and do something different that will catch the eye.

"I've really enjoyed it here, the style of football, the facilities and the lads are excellent and I'd like to think that I have fitted in well.

"The way the gaffer wants to play the game really suits me and I can't wait for the season to get underway."

Richards, who spent the 2007-08 season on loan at Saturday's opponents, believes his versatility will be crucial in claiming a starting berth.

He said: "Obviously I was pleased with the goal that I scored against Albion and hope it will be the first of many.

"I can play on the left side of midfield, in the centre or at left-back, wherever the boss wants me.

"We have a young, enthusiastic squad here, everyone knows what is expected of them and we are encouraged to go out and enjoy our football."

Richards, who has one cap for the England under-21s, started his career at Ipswich, coming through the ranks at Portman Road to make 168 appearances, scoring nine goals, before being released in Roy Keane's clearout this summer.

Walsall chief Chris Hutchings does not expect any more new arrivals before Saturday but is delighted with his capture of Richards.

Hutchings said: "Matt is an accomplished player. He comes here at a good age and has good experience at a higher level.

"As a left footer he gives us nice balance and is a footballer of undoubted quality."
