Wolves wait on Lescott windfall

Wolves are awaiting developments with increased interest after Everton turned down an £18million bid for Joleon Lescott from Manchester City.

The club negotiated a sell-on clause of at least 10 per cent when Lescott left Molineux in 2006 for £5m. That means Wolves will pocket a slice of the profit Everton made on the initial transfer.

But it is understood the Toffees are now seeking as much as £28million before reconsidering their stance not to sell – a figure which would trigger a £2.3million windfall to Wolves.

An Everton club statement read: "We can confirm we have received a bid of £18m from Manchester City for Joleon Lescott and that has been rejected outright."

After increasing their bid by £3million, City aren't expected to get close to the £28million Everton want.

But it seems they will continue chipping away to get their man as big-spending City look to pair Lescott with £15million recruit Kolo Toure from Arsenal, after failing in an audacious bid to prise John Terry from Chelsea.

The Toffees have already rejected an offer of £15million from City for the England international, who made 235 appearances for Wolves from 1997.

It is understood Lescott, who lives in the Manchester area, would be keen to hear City's plans.

But one bargaining chip disappeared last night, with City defender Nedum Onuoha signing a new five-year contract at Eastlands.

It had been suggested Everton may have been prepared to do business if Onuoha would have been part of a new deal.
