The Saddlers have rejected a £200,000 bid from Scunthorpe for Gerrard – sparking an auction for the wantaway star.

Manager Chris Hutchings is now braced for a fight to keep the transfer-listed defender with a host of clubs, including Charlton, primed to firm up their interest.

Smith expects Gerrard to move sooner rather than later, because of his extra class.

The 20-year-old said: "He's an exceptional player with lots of ability - he's one of our best players.

"I hope he will stay, but it's only a matter of time before he moves onto a higher level and better club.

"When you are playing with players like Anthony Gerrard, it's great to have them alongside you.

"He is always there to help you if you make a mistake."
