Clayton Ince, Netan Sansara, Chris Palmer, Manny Smith and Rene Gilmartin have all agreed to stay at Walsall, although Jabo Ibehre and Sofiene Zaaboub are still to commit.

The Saddlers chief was putting any transfer action on hold, until he knew who was staying. Now he has the green light to bring in new recruits.

He said: "Over the next week we'll be clearer of exactly what's needed and what we need to go for.

"We've been working behind the scenes and hopefully there can be one or two additions to the squad with those who re-sign."

But Hutchings revealed his frustration at not being able to nail down his squad list before now.

He said: "It's very frustrating because all you want to do is get a piece of paper and write definite, definite and definite - or we need that and need cover for them.

"With so many contracts up we were left in a little bit of limbo. All players exercised their rights and left it as long as possible but we were left saying 'are they or aren't they staying?'

"You look forward to the day because you move on and do what you need to do."
