Player signings on hold for Harriers

Kidderminster manager Mark Yates has promised fans he can rebuild the team whatever happens this summer - but admits player recruitment is on hold for now.

Harriers are letting go of 10 players who formed a squad that only missed out on the play-off's of the final day of the Blue Square Premier season.

Seven will be free to go when their contracts are officially up at the end of the month, while Luke Jones, Andy Ferrell and skipper Mark Creighton have all joined other clubs.

Despite not having enough players on the books to field a team, Yates is in no rush to find replacements.

He wants to wait until plans to increase his budget take effect, and feels there will still plenty of talent available when that happens.

The manager said: "Actually going out and putting pen to paper won't happen until I know where I am, so in that sense player recruitment is on hold for now.

"There's no point me going out and getting 20 players for a certain amount when there could be more in the budget later.

"Everybody is playing the waiting game at the moment, that's the level we are at. The likes of Stevenage and Oxford are doing their business early, but they have bigger resources than most at our level.

"If you look around, a lot of the other clubs are not doing much yet - so we are not out of anything."

Yates is keeping a close watch on talent movement while he waits, and has even not ruled out that some of his released stars could return to Aggborough if they cannot get fixed up elsewhere.

With the market set to be flooded with players in the wake of football's recession, the Harriers boss and assistant Neil Howarth know it could be a buyer's market.

One that could be ripe for him to cherry pick from.

He said: "Myself and Neil are keeping our powder dry at the moment, but we are keeping updated with many, many situations and I am speaking to lots of people.

"We are still hopeful of being able to bring some good players to the club, maybe even some of the boys that did so well for us last season.

"There will be far more people available this summer, because a lot of clubs will be going with tighter squads with finances as they are.

"Whatever happens we are confident we will be able to bring good players in."
