Blues had led through Keith Fahey's 56th minute header, before all hell broke loose three minutes later.

A wild melee saw Lee Bowyer for the home side and Lee Williamson for the visitors both sent off.

Seven minutes later Preston were level, Paul McKenna with the equaliser from long range.

Then St Andrew's was stunned with a minute to go, when Ross Wallace limbered up and fired a stunning free-kick into the back of the net.

Pleasure was not without pain though, the winger's over exhuberent celebrations led to a red card for a second booking.

But Blues' will care only about the result, with Sheffield United breathing down their necks a point and place behind them in third going into the last round of fixtures next Sunday.

The Blades go to Crystal Palace in game 46, while Alex McLeish's side go to Reading - who could still grab second if they won both their remaining games and United were beaten.
