The Saddlers travel to third placed Millwall, who still harbour ambitions of automatic promotion from League One, on Saturday looking to extend their three match unbeaten run.

Walsall's own promotion hopes have been left in tatters as they sit 13th in the table, 12 points off the top six with 18 left to collect.

But they have recovered from their 5-0 humiliation at home to Bristol Rovers three weeks ago and the versatile wideman reckons, since the defeat, they have new found resilience and wants a final flourish.

He said: "Since the management have been here we have set some extra standards and have a 'don't be beaten' mentality.

"We have defended very well recently and we are always going to create chances, we have done that all season, so it's a matter of doing that and not conceding goals.

"I know last season the team went on quite a good run and if we can do that at this late stage of the season we would end on a high."

Ahead of their trip to south London, the Saddlers seem destined to finish in mid-table but Palmer is honest enough to admit if they do, they deserve it.

He said: "All we have to do is to go into each game positively and you never know how you might end up.

"We are coming off with good results but we don't want to get ahead of ourselves, the table doesn't lie and we will end up where we deserve to be."

Palmer has looked at the final six fixtures, which include a trip to promotion hopefuls MK Dons and the visit of Tranmere, and feels the Saddlers need to prove themselves and could cause an upset.

He said: "All the teams in the league, even the big team have lost games they expect to win.

"All the teams we have played who are above us we've given a good account of ourselves, but we still have been disappointed against the results against the bigger sides."
