The defender scored the Saddlers' third goal in last night's comfortable 3-0 victory over Brighton, but limped off midway through the second half and is ruled out for the next five games.

With the loan deadline on March 26 fast approaching, manager Hutchings headed for the telephone immediately after the win at the Banks's Stadium.

Assistant boss Martin O'Connor revealed Hutchings was already working on new recruits.

"The gaffer is on the phone as we speak, so we shall see," he said.

"Anthony has done his calf. We think it will be about three to four weeks, which is a blow. That takes away a big part of our game, but we will get on with it, that's what we've got to do."

Gerrard had only just returned from a two-week lay-off with a hamstring problem and his injury took the gloss off an imposing win over the Seagulls.

Captain in the absence of Stephen Hughes, unavailable due to personal reasons, the 22-year-old impressed at the back as the Saddlers helped erase memories of their 5-0 capitulation to Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

First half goals from Mark Bradley, Troy Deeney and Gerrard left O'Connor impressed with the performance, which moved Walsall up to 13th in League One.
