Marsh tips Walsall to bounce back

Walsall legend Chris Marsh reckons the Saddlers' Bristol Rovers nightmare could become a positive ahead of the clash with Brighton.

Their woeful 5-0 home drubbing at the hands of the Pirates on Saturday led boss Chris Hutchings to label his side "clueless".

Brighton visit the Banks's Stadium after their own 5-0 win over Yeovil at the weekend, but Marsh is sure the shellshocked Saddlers can use defeat to their advantage.

He said: "I don't think they will be complacent under Chris and Martin O'Connor and it's a kick up the backside to show them, if they thought they were good enough, they're not and will hopefully work as a positive.

"They've got a good management team and they will put them right. Because they started so well, expectation levels were up and you are hoping it was just a one-off.

"They'll be wanting a good performance and hopefully bounce back. It's like a boxer getting knocked out, you want a rematch quickly."

Marsh, who made 471 appearances for Walsall between 1988 and 2001, feels the players owe the fans a performance.

He said: "I'm pleased they've got the game at home because they can put it right with the fans. We know the crowd can be a bit critical and they've every right to be after losing 5-0 but they will still turn up in their numbers.

"Throughout your career you don't get beaten 5-0 often and when it does you want to come out of it quickly.

"You defend as a team and defend from the front and Chris and Martin will be aware of that and tonight can't come quickly enough."

Manager Hutchings, a former Walsall team-mate of Marsh, is still expected to bring in a defender before the loan deadline on March 26 and the 39-year-old feels it is needed.

He said: "I look at them and they still need a couple of players, a little bit of quality, and there will be some rebuilding to be done in the summer."
