We can wing it all the way - Kites
Michael Kightly believes Wolves can wing it all the way to the Premier League.
Michael Kightly believes Wolves can wing it all the way to the Premier League.
Kightly and Matt Jarvis destroyed Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, with exciting wing play that left Molineux buzzing.
Manager Mick McCarthy has the added insurance policy of Stephen Ward's extra aerial power and physical strength, as he ponders his options for the trip to Portman Road, where Ipswich were unbeaten until February last season.
The Tractor Boys have added £1.1million Gareth McAuley, £500,000 Richard Wright, £800,000 Tim Balkestein and £750,000 Kevin Lisbie, as well as pricey Bosmans Ivan Campo and Ben Thatcher this summer.
A hamstring injury prevented Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi joining for £2.5m this week, while a near £500,000 move for Fulham's Moritz Volz appears to be heading the same way.
While Kightly is a big fan of Ward, the ongoing debate as to whether Wolves can operate with two out and out wingers is a 'fait accomplis' for him – despite Ipswich's increased financial muscle in the transfer market.
Kightly said: "I think we can play the same way away. To be fair to Wardy he had a great pre-season and deserved to have his place in the team.
"If the gaffer wants to freshen things up, that's up to him – in the Championship, games are different, week to week.
"He might play someone one week then someone else the next – not because of how they've done but because of how it suits the other team and we've got the result.
"Jarvo is a really good player. He's growing in confidence week by week and if you can get him and me in full flight at the top of our games, then we can do damage to teams.
"I don't think we've got anyone to fear home or away in this league. On our day we'll beat anyone and we proved that. know the Blackburn game was only a friendly, but we showed we can turn Premier League sides over because in the second half we steamrollered them.
"So I think we can go to any side in this league and win. We had a tough start last week after going 1-0 down. It showed character from the boys to come back and win the way we did.
"We've got a great team and a great squad. Whoever plays, I feel can do more than a good enough job to win games.
"Hopefully we can carry on that form. We played fairly well at Plymouth and should have probably won that game. If we can do the same tomorrow then who knows?"
Wolves were cruelly robbed of Kightly and Jarvis for five and four months respectively last season, absences which many believe cost the team a play-off spot.
Not surprisingly then, Kightly has targeted fitness and consistency as key factors, if Wolves are to achieve their aim of promotion this season.
He said: "If we want to get to where we want to be, we have to be playing like that every week. Hopefully we can keep everyone fit and push on this season.
"That's going to be mine and Jarvo's aim – the same if Wardy comes in because he's a good pro and a good player. Mickey Gray can play on either wing too – he's a top player so we've got strength in depth.
"Hopefully myself and Jarvo can carry it on. I feel fit and good, my ankle has never felt better and I have no problems with it whatsoever.
"From the Walsall game onwards, I feel as if I've been playing alright. Hopefully I can carry on that form for many games to come."
The stunning impact of Chris Iwelumo appears to have almost guaranteed his place on the teamsheet. Kightly admits the emergence of the 6ft 3in targetman has introduced a much-needed presence to the Wolves attack.
He said: "He's been a great signing – a revelation. He's exactly what we needed. Whether he's coming off the bench or starting, he just gives us something else.
"With the other strikers we've got in Andy Keogh, Sam Vokes and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, we look strong. I link up with Chris well but I also link up well with Andy Keogh well too, so I feel I can link up with whoever plays out of the four strikers.
"Chris came in last week, deserved his two goals and man of the match award because he was superb. We know what we're getting from Sylvan but Vokesy has shown he can come on and play a part. Andy is proven at this level as well."
Ipswich boss Jim Magilton has a similar dilemma to counterpart McCarthy down the flanks.
Magilton chose Jon Walters and Liam Trotter last week at Burnley and their impact seemed to work as the Tractor Boys won 3-0. The former Southampton midfielder could also switch Walters to the left and play Danny Haynes on the right.
But it seems he will bring in tricky Alan Quinn – a former Wolves target – to take up the left wing berth, with Walters keeping his place on the right.
Despite their impressive home form last season, Ipswich lost to Preston at Portman Road on the opening day.
