The Irishman, who will turn 21 later this week, will step up to the role of number-two shot-stopper following the departure of Frenchman Bertrand Bossu at the end of the season.

He has become the first player to sign a contract since the permanent appointment of Jimmy Mullen as manager last week.

And he is hoping for regular reserve team football after spending most of last season injured or on loan at Hednesford.

He joins full-back Paul Boertien in committing himself to the Saddlers for next season.

"I am very happy to sign this new contract," he said.

"Last season was a tough one, but Eric McManus (goalkeeping coach) obviously sees potential in me.

"I enjoy working closely with Eric and Clayton and can only learn from them.

"I want to continue improving and hopefully grab my first-team chance with both hands if and when it comes along.

"There is sure to be a chance for me somewhere along the line and it is up to me to take it and show the gaffer what I can do."

And Gilmartin is happy to see Mullen take the top job after first meeting him when he was assistant manager to Phil Starbuck at Hednesford.

"Jimmy is a very good coach," said Gilmartin. "I always felt that he was too good for Hednesford's level.

"He gets on well with the players and his sessions are always bright, quick and sharp.

"I am looking forward to working under him and making progress."
