A West Brom fan has shown he is on the ball by winning the manager of the month prize in the Express & Star's Fantasy Football game.

Signmaker David Westwood, 28, of Fieldfare Close, Cradley Heath, received a cheque for £100, courtesy of game sponsor Wickes, after topping the table in February by six points.

His team Dave's Dream Team, named after his nickname, amassed 74 points during the month, beating more than 4,200 rivals to top spot.

His team of Premier League stars is: T Howard (Everton), G Clichy (Arsenal), R Ferdinand (Man Utd), J Belletti (Chelsea), J Lescott (Everton), A Young (Aston Villa), K Richardson (Sunderland), C Ronaldo (Man Utd), D Bentley (Blackburn), A Adebayor (Arsenal), Benjani (Man City)

David achieved the feat despite only entering the game in January – four months after the competition's launch.

David said: "I thought I would have a go because I knew you could still win a manager of the month prize.

"I knew I had no chance of winning the overall prize but it was worth entering – and it's paid off. I had the advantage of being able to see which players were in form."

David puts his success down to his February transfers, having brought in Aston Villa's John Carew and Newcastle's Michael Owen for short spells when he thought they were most likely to score.

"Carew got a hat-trick so it worked out for me," he says.

Despite being an Albion fan, David says he had no problem with signing former Wolves favourite Joleon Lescott.

"It was tough but he is in form and is a bit different to my other central defender, Rio Ferdinand," he said.

David, who works for family firm DJW Signs, in Powke Lane, Cradley Heath, believes West Brom can still gain automatic promotion to the Premier League.

"It will be disappointing if we miss out again this year," he said. "We have been playing some good stuff but I am sure we will be there or thereabouts."

Fans can still sign up to stand a chance of winning the £2,000 top prize or one of the remaining £100 manager of the month awards.
