Young Mutley has set his sights on regaining the British title after defeating Vladimir Borovski at the Banks's Stadium in Walsall last night.
The West Bromwich-born welterweight scored a points victory over his Ukrainian counter-part in six three-minute rounds.
It was an impressive display against a seasoned opponent who came in to the contest with a record of 19 wins, 24 losses and one draw.
Borovski absorbed all that Mutley had to offer, but the 31-year-old more than deserved his win."It was a tough test, but I was happy with how I fought," said Mutley. "Borovski was strong, really strong. I kept hitting him, but he kept coming back.
"I didn't know too much about Borovski, but he surprised me with how tough he was. He was a really tough fighter, so it was a good comeback fight for me."
This was Mutley's first taste of action since his defeat at the hands of Colin Lynes for the British and European titles back in July.
That was at light-welterweight but now, back at welterweight, Mutley believes he is ready to once again challenge for the British title.
Kevin McIntyre is the current holder, having defeated Kevin Anderson - successor to Mutley following a tenth-round stoppage in June, 2006 - earlier this year.
McIntyre and Anderson look set for a re-match in February and Mutley would relish the chance to regain his title against either opponent.
"If and when that fight comes off I want to fight the winner," he added. "I still believe that I should have that belt.
"I think I'm the best welterweight in the country. I feel stronger and faster at this weight.
"I want to sharpen myself up and take on either Anderson or McIntyre. I want a shot at getting my belt back."
Elsewhere on the under-card of 1st Team Promotions' show, Walsall's Matty Hough drew with Welshman Jamie Ambler in an even four-round contest.
West Bromwich's Wayne Downing defeated Brierley Hill's Martin Gordon for a second time following his points win last December thanks to another points victory over four rounds.
Coventry's Steve Bendall joined Mutley in defeating a tough Ukrainian over six rounds as he recorded a points victory over Alexander Matviechuk.
Completing the action, Scott Evans was on familiar territory to pick up the second victory of his fledgling career.
The 19 year-old lightweight, who helps run the Sunday market at the Banks's Stadium, maintained his unbeaten start to life as a professional boxer with a third round stoppage of Birmingham veteran Karl Taylor.
