Birmingham have confirmed Wilson Palacios' brother has been kidnapped in Honduras.

The capture of Edwin Rene Palacios is a repeat of similar acts in Central and South America in recent years where criminals have targeted relatives of high profile footballers in an attempt to make big money.

The brother of Brazilian star Robinho was also targeted.

Palacios has been given permission to return to his homeland but has remained with Blues with police saying there is nothing the player can do to help.

A club statement read: "Birmingham City FC can regretfully confirm stories in today's media concerning the kidnapping of Wilson Palacios' brother are true.

"The club is supporting the player at this difficult time and helping him remain in constant contact with his family in Honduras.

"The matter is being dealt with capably by the Honduran police, therefore Wilson is staying in the UK in the hope his 15-year-old brother, Edwin Rene, will be returned to his family soon.

"Wilson has the club's permission to return back to Honduras at anytime, if he so wishes."
