Mr Morgan, who owns Redrow Homes, joined a team of wealthy volunteers to travel to the poverty-stricken region in a bid to make a difference to its people. He was one of eight of the country's most successful businesspeople chosen to achieve the challenge without simply just handing out cash.

The group has amassed a massive £600 million fortune between them and have expertise ranging from marketing to pubs, and weddings to ICT.

But there was no lavish living during the trip, which is set to be screened as a four-part series called Millionaires' Mission on Channel 4 next week.

The group, which also included marketing entrepreneur Deidre Bounds, had to make do with sleeping under the canvas of tents while getting heat from a camp fire and fetching water from a spring a mile away. They camped out for three-and-a-half weeks at Nykasiru, in rural south-western Uganda.

World Vision set the group the task of coming up with projects to help the poor community stand in its own two feet.

The village has 1,000 inhabitants in two parishes strung across two hills. Its landscape is lush but off the beaten track.

It needed the help of business-minded people as it could not continue forward by continuing to subsist on potatoes, goats, chickens and hand-outs from charities.

Each of the entrepreneurs pledged £15,000 to improve life and since his return to the UK Mr Morgan has reportedly set about providing mains water to about 3,500 inhabitants of the valley around Nykasiru.

The first programme goes out on Channel 4 at 9pm on Wednesday September 19.
