The Saddlers' new left-back suffered two serious knee injuries during his eight years at Derby and missed much of last season through injury.
But he has stressed he is now fit and raring to go ahead of the League One campaign.
"I've had two injuries but they were both contact injuries," said Boertien.
"It's not like my ligaments went, they were both tackles and when that happens there's not too much you can do about it.
"I played a few games last season and just picked up a silly injury, but apart from that I feel good.
"This is a good club and the manager likes us to pass the ball, which is the way I like to play.
"I was out of contract and some clubs were a bit wary because of my injury problems so, as soon as I spoke to the gaffer, I wanted to come here.
"The gaffer contacted my agent and said that he wanted me to come here.
"With the injury problems I've had in the past he was a bit worried and he wanted me to play a game and prove I was fit. Once I'd done that it all happened quite quickly."
Boertien is now gearing up for the big kick-off to the new season against his first club, Carlisle, on August 11.
And the 28-year-old reckons that a flying start to the campaign could be the key to Walsall challenging at the right end of the table.
