The board are hoping to discuss the issue of the new chairman next week, with the candidate likely to be someone local with connections to the community.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said there will be discussions with owner Sir Jack Heyward .

He said today: "It's something we'll pick up with Sir Jack once he's back in the country sometime next week.

"I believe Sir Jack is looking for the director who is active in business and social circles in the area and is known locally, and who can reach out to the local community."

Currently the board compromises Moxey and local businessmen Kevin Threlfall and John Gough, who were appointed in July after previous chairman Rick Hayward and director Paul Manduca stepped down.

Moxey said the club was not being harmed by having a reduced board.

"Some football clubs operate with a very small board," he said.

"It is not unusual for football clubs, especially clubs owned by a single person as we are with Sir Jack, to have a small board.

"It is a similar situation at Middlesbrough and Rea-ding."

But the chief executive also warned fans the announcement would probably not be tied to a takeover.

"This is not connected to a takover or a massive injection of money.

"It is Sir Jack wanting to address some of the issues at the club that he thinks need addressing."ner Sir Jack Hayward.

He said today: "It's something we'll pick up with Sir Jack once he's back in the country sometime next week."
