Actor and singer Ben Platt has said he is “thrilled” to star in his first full run of shows on the London stage for the UK premiere of the musical Midnight At The Never Get.

The stage and screen actor, 32, is best known for staring in Dear Evan Hansen, Theatre Camp and the Pitch Perfect films.

He will soon star in the musical set in 1965 New York City. It follows Trevor Copland and Arthur Brightman’s illegal romance, where the pair perform love songs in their secret nightclub act “Midnight” as an act of defiance.

However, as tensions rise amid the start of a historic movement, the pair are torn between their own secret affair and oncoming storm of social revolution.

Written by Grammy-award winning composer Mark Sonnenblick, who was behind a number of the hit Kpop Demon Hunters songs including Golden, the production will be directed by David Cromer at the Menier Chocolate Factory theatre in London.

Platt said: “I’m thrilled to be undertaking my first full run on the London stage at the Menier as it transforms into the nightclub setting of The Never Get.

“It’s truly wonderful to work with Mark, who is not only a genius songwriter, but who has also become a true friend.

“It’s a very special piece, my first wholly original musical since Dear Evan Hansen, and we look forward to working with the generationally talented David Cromer to create this singular experience.”

Sonnenblick, who previously worked with Platt on the musical comedy Theatre Camp, described the actor as a “once-in-a-generation performer”.

He said: “This show means a tremendous amount to me and it’s a gift to collaborate with Ben again.

“I can’t wait for audiences to experience his performance in the beautifully intimate theatre at the Menier. It’s also a huge privilege to work with the brilliant David Cromer as we realise the piece afresh for its UK premiere.”

Platt will soon also star in the upcoming West End concert staging of Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years alongside musical theatre star Rachel Zegler from March 24-29.

The production, marking 25 years of the musical, will be staged at the London Palladium, where Zegler recently starred in the musical Evita – which drew large outdoor crowds while she sang the musical’s most popular number from an outside balcony.

Midnight at The Never Get opens at the Menier Chocolate Factory on July 20 July and will run until September 12 with the full cast yet to be announced.
