Subaru still scores with stylish yet rugged SUV

While many brands are going all-out EV, the Subaru Crosstrek, with its legendary Boxer engine, still has a loyal following.

While more electric vehicles arrive on the market, Subaru's tried, tested, and impressive Boxer engine technology continues to prove why loyalty to this brand runs so deep. The Crosstrek features the two-litre engine, but offers so much more, including Subaru’s famed all-wheel-drive system, striking looks, and brilliant practicality, which was demonstrated during a house move.

Rugged but classy exterior

The Crosstrek presents a sleek silhouette while simultaneously channelling "I'm ready for an adventure" energy that defines the Subaru character.

The frameless hexagonal grille is framed by sleek headlights that give the front end a modern, focused appearance. Black wheel arch cladding reinforces the crossover's adventurous spirit, while diamond-cut alloy wheels—available in 17 or 18-inch depending on specification—add a premium touch.

This Touring model also features integrated roof bars, a rear spoiler, and a powered sunroof, blending style with genuine utility. It looks the part, whether you're heading up a dirt track or the tip.

Interior and technology

While not quite luxurious, the cabin is lavishly equipped with sporty styling cues, comfortable leather upholstery, and powered, 10-way adjustable heated seats on this Touring model. The commanding driving position and excellent all-round visibility make for a reassuring experience behind the wheel.

The centrepiece is an 11.6-inch high-resolution tablet-style touchscreen - a standard feature that controls navigation, infotainment, and smartphone connectivity via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with full-screen display.

A clever integration of the what3words navigation system allows drivers to input precise three-word addresses by text or voice, directing you exactly to a specific scenic viewpoint or trailhead. A TFT information screen behind the steering wheel provides real-time driving data, while this model adds dual-zone air-conditioning, a powered sunroof, reversing camera, LED lights, keyless entry, privacy glass on rear windows, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a head-up display for enhanced safety.

Powertrain and performance

While Subaru now have the Solterra EV, the Crosstrek, at the moment, is holding out under the full EV onslaught like a stubborn but charming caveman. The e-Boxer hybrid petrol engine pairs a 1,995cc four-cylinder unit with an electric motor and semi-automatic CVT transmission.

Combined output is 136bhp, which delivers decent pace for everyday driving - though performance enthusiasts should note the 0-62mph sprint is, nowadays, considered pedestrian at 10.8 seconds.

It cruises comfortably at motorway speeds, and while the CVT can become noticeably vocal under hard acceleration it remains composed and refined in normal driving conditions. Fuel economy sits at an average of 37.9mpg - just about respectable for the type of vehicle, but nowhere near class-leading, as the permanent 4x4 system adds weight that compromises efficiency.

The trade-off, however, is the kind of all-weather confidence that makes you feel invincible when the forecast turns biblical. And with 220mm of ground clearance, you'll make light work of rough terrain, potholed B-roads, or the occasional kerb when parallel parking goes slightly awry.

Off-road capability

Subaru's legendary all-wheel-drive heritage shines through the latest, improved X-MODE system, which offers more responsive 4x4 capability with enhanced on- and off-road control. Hill Descent Control maximises grip on slippery surfaces and steep inclines, while the generous 220mm ground clearance ensures you'll navigate challenging trails with confidence.

Practicality

Practicality remains a strong suit, with ample storage throughout the cabin and a towing capacity of 1,270kg. Boot space measures 315 litres, expanding to 922 litres with both rear seatbacks folded - more than enough for weekend adventures or loading the proverbial kitchen sink. Which it pretty much did.

With a protective cover and a surprising amount of stuff was shifted, whether moving bits and pieces of furniture to the new abode, or dumping junk at the tip, we would have struggled without it.

Safety

The updated EyeSight Driver Assist Technology uses cameras on either side of the rear-view mirror to scan for hazards up to 100 metres ahead. Features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Cross Traffic Warning. These systems work together to provide comprehensive protection in both urban and rural environments.

Verdict

The Subaru Crosstrek isn't the cheapest option in its class, starting at £34,345 and climbing to £36,345 for this well equipped Touring model.

However, the equipment list is generous, and the blend of rugged capability, improved interior quality, and proven reliability makes the left-field alternative case. Shame it didn’t come with a furniture loading trolley.
