The week in pictures

A selection of snapshots taken from the Express & Star across the last week.

gallery1.jpgThis vehicle suddenly found itself underwater when it was travelling through Trescott Ford in Trysull, near Wolverhampton, and it splashed into a flooded ford. After a fortnight's worth of rain fell over the previous weekend, fords rose to dangerous levels and the River Penk in Penkridge burst its banks on Monday.

gallery2.jpgWith parking like this, the vandals who stole this four-ton dumper truck would have probably failed their driving test. It was stolen from Great Bridge market in Tipton, driven along the towpath and through a canal lock, before being wedged into the canal. To make matters worse, it was set alight shortly afterwards.

gallery3.jpgJust a month ago it was a derelict site on a busy road in Wolverhampton, but all that changed in a matter of days as the shell of a controversial new Lidl supermarket sprang up. The German supermarket giant's acquisitions manager, Charlotte Davies, said "they seem keen to see it open before Christmas."

gallery4.jpgBilston town centre was locked down last week after a series serious injuries occurred at the Tropical Harmony nightspot in High Street. Two people were shot and another was stabbed, though all were expected to recover. The following day traders were turned away from their businesses as High Street was shut down while police detectives continued to investigate the incident.

gallery5.jpgLucky lottery winners David and Marina Williams, previously of Brierley Hill, won almost a million pounds on the lottery and were seen last Tuesday splashing out £40,000 on a brand new Jaguar XF, at Stratstone Jaguar in Wolverhampton. "It's only me that can drive," Mr. Williams said. "And I've always wanted a Jaguar but until now have had to make do with a Citroen C3." Unsurprisingly they were able to pay off the car in one lump sum, despite the various finance options that were no doubt made available to them.

gallery7.jpgHow slow must you go? That's the question Mark Andrews was trying to answer last Wednesday. An electronic 'slow down' warning on Tipton Road in Dudley is not just triggered by speeding motorists, but also by law-abiding motorists, cyclists and even joggers. Indeed, it appears as though anybody travelling above 4mph is moving too quickly for Dudley Council, who claim that the sign is doing exactly what they intended it to do. That would be annoying people, presumably.

gallery8.jpgMark Grimmett, the lucky winner of four pence on Channel Four's Deal or No Deal game show, was seeing the funny side of things last Thursday as he showed off his winnings. Despite being one of the biggest losers in the history of the show, Mark, aged 38 from Kingswinford, said: "it was the most amazing experience and to this day I wouldn't change a thing. I had a chance to go for it and I went for it so there are no regrets."

During the show, Mark was offered £20,000 by the banker on the hit show, and turned it down - and then promptly wiped out £250,000, £100,000 and £50,000 in three disastrous moves. He was left with just 2p on the table, which the banker cheekily doubled to 4p. Mr. Grimmett must now decide how to spend his winnings.

gallery9.jpgAn airport-style metal detector has been installed at a Wolverhampton school as part of the police battle against knife crime. The device has been brought into Parkfield High School in Wolverhampton Road East for two weeks. Despite the school not having a problem with knives, they invited the police to carry out the test in order to spread the anti-knife-carrying message.

Expect students to be loading themselves with as much metal as they can lay their hands on so that they can delay going to their classes.

gallery10.jpgWollaston butcher Mark Felton challenged his customers to snap themselves abroad holding aloft the shop's centenary carrier bag. Confused residents of countries all across the world soon saw the bags popping up everywhere - even underwater. The bags were commissioned by Harris Butchers to celebrate the shop's 100th milestone, and Mr Felton started handing them out to customers to encourage them to go green. Now over 60 photographs adorn the shop window in Bridgnorth Road.
