The estate agents in charge of the sale are now gearing up for a rush of interest in the pretty cottage from football enthusiasts everywhere.

Wright, who was known as the Ironbridge Rocket, was born at the property in 1924.

The sports star, who died in 1994, was a former Wolves defender who made 105 starts for his country between 1946 and 1959.

His birthplace is now being sold by Nick Tart estate agents for around £275,000.nextpageDan Wright of Nick Tart Estate Agents (no relation!)

Dan Wright (pictured above), Nick Tart Ironbridge office manager, who is no relation, said: "We are thrilled to be handling the sale of this historic property which features a heritage plaque boasting of its famous former occupant.

"Billy Wright was the first footballing superstar and this is a great opportunity for someone to buy into this sporting legend."

A special open day will be held at the property from 11am to 2pm on June 21.nextpageHolly Cottage

Mr Wright added: "Billy Wright is widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation."

In 1998 the plaque to commemorate the footballer was unveiled at his Ironbridge birthplace by his widow, Beverley sister Joy Beverley-Wright.

She was joined by her twin sisters and her grandchildren to unveil the plaque, which was cast by the Coalbrookdale Company.

Mrs Beverley-Wright had contacted The Gorge Parish Council in early 1998 asking for a monument to be placed at his birthplace.
