The ultimate Christmas guide for scrooge's, spenders, and everyone inbetween
Don't you just love those friends and relations who give you absolutely no clue what they want for Christmas? The ones that say 'just being with you is enough', or 'there's nothing that I want really'. Yep, you hate them, I hate them, but luckily for you I know exactly what you can get them no matter your budget.
Keep reading for the best Christmas present ideas for 2014.
If you have a normal budget
So you've come to me with an average budget, asking what you can get for that special person that they'll really love. I'm not talking a teddy bear for a distant cousin's kid, I'm focusing on your children, wife, husband, mum, or dad. These ideas are for the who really matter to you, those who's Christmases you really can't afford to mess up with a bad present! So here are the top five things you can buy this year:
1. A Playstation 4 / Xbox One / Nintendo 3DS - from £150
Depending on the age of your children, these game consoles are set to be the star buys this Christmas. If you're looking for something for an older teen or your partner, then go for the PS4 or Xbox One. If you don't know which one they'd like better, ask their friends which console they're getting or already have. That way they can all play online together. Look at bundles which include a few games on Amazon and Game. A bundle will cost around £329 - £399 depending on what is included.
If you're buying for a younger age group, go for the Nintendo 3DS (or 2DS, if you're worried about the 3D capabilities on their eyesight). This is the perfect handheld console with lots of age appropriate games. If you're not sure what games to start them off with, take a look at Amazon or Game's top Nintendo 3DS game chart. Fantasy Life, Super Smash Brothers and Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are set to be the big sellers though! You'll be looking to spend around £150.
2. A tablet - from £31
You can't really go wrong with a tablet, no matter what age you're buying for. If you're buying for a grubby-handed and accident prone child, something cheaper like the Allwinner A13 Tablet (just over £30 from Amazon) means you don't have to worry so much about it getting broken.
Otherwise Apple iPads and the Google Nexus are always big winners. If you're looking for something for an older individual, maybe try a Kindle instead which range from £59 - £229. Just make sure you download a few books to start them off, you don't want to spend the whole of Christmas day trying to explain how to use it!
3. A fitness tracker - from £59.95
If you know the person you're buying for is very fitness orientated, or plans to make a New Year's Resolution to get fitter, then you're onto a winner with a fitness tracker. Fitness trackers tend to monitor steps, workouts, and sleep patterns. These range from around £59.95 for a Fitbit Flex to £91.50 for a Jawbone UP24. Just make sure they have a phone that will work with the apps needed.
4. A watch - price depends on quality
The reason why I'm mentioning a watch and not a shiny, sparkly, crazy-cool, smart-watch is not only because plain old watches are a classic gift choice, but because there are so many incredible deals on them at this time of year. Check out Amazon for cut prices on some big names in the watch world, and maybe treat your loved one to something they'll want to wear for the next five years, rather than replace after just a few months, like they probably would do with a smart-watch.
5. Make your own hamper - price depends on what you buy
This is a great idea for older relatives, who, let's face it, will hate pretty much any 'thoughtful' present you try to get for them. Buy yourself a cheap box or basket, and fill it with a lot of little things you know they'll love. This works well if you want to buy one thing for both your gran and grandad - pop in a nice biscuit gift box, some more expensive teabags than they'd normally buy for themselves (for example the teapigs range), maybe two new mugs, and then tie it all up in some gift-wrap. They'll love it - especially the thought that goes into it - much more than something like a book they'll never read or something techy they'll never use.
If youre Mr/s Moneybags
Although I, and most people reading this, are exceedingly jealous of your millions and squillions of pounds, I'll attempt to give you some present ideas. I'll assume your friends are just as rich as you and won't feel eternally grateful for something worth more than most people's homes are…
1. Gold toilet paper - £825,839
I'm starting this with a classic of course. The 22 carat gold roll is made by Australian company the Toilet Paper Man and I'm sure the cost will be just a drop in the ocean of your enormous bank balance. A good substitute for this is the black designer toilet paper which Simon Cowell oh so famously can't live without (in case the person you're buying for isn't quite worthy, in your eyes, of the status that comes with gold toilet paper).
2. Super dog house with plasma TV and spa - £261,539
Does your very rich friend have a very rich, spoilt dog? Well it's not spoilt enough if it doesn't have a super dog house. Make sure your friend never has to physically interact with their 'best friend' again with an extension of their home containing; a 52 inch plasma TV, two sheepskin daybeds (doggy sofas) that are obviously temperature controlled, an outdoor play area including a sheltered CCTV enabled area and a temperature controlled spa with purification system. There's much more, but I need to stop before I shed a tear for the poor dogs forced to make do with a super dog house with just a 48" TV and sofas without the temperature-control all thanks to their selfish owners going through 'tougher times'.
3. The Privilege One Ultra Super Yacht - £316,638,635
Ok this would be a really extravagant present for a friend (maybe just get them a smaller yacht) but for a family member this is completely acceptable. The Privilege One doesn't just remind you how much better off you are than everyone else with it's name; this 10-deck yacht can carry 36 people, 12 tenders and dayboats, 6 jet-skis, 4 cars, and has 3 pools. Don't worry about people coming after you and your money either; it has the highest grade security and 'secure areas' throughout - whatever that means.
If youre Scrooge
Firstly, you should know that no one will like your gifts, no matter what you get for them. If you're going for the cheapest thing over the best value, you're just wasting your own money because your gift recipient will be getting rid of the present as soon as you're not looking. But it's your choice…
1. An e-card
Too thrifty to even send a real card? Ok, I'll admit this is fine for those distant acquaintances - you know the ones; you've only ever had their email and never even asked for their number. But for your closest friends and family? This is very Scrooge-like of you. All about the money and not about the sentimentality of this time of year, and now everyone will see that.
2. 'A drink next time I see you'
You and I both know this will never happen. The next time you see them you'll both have forgotten about Christmas. Or worse yet, they'll remember (and be thoroughly peeved with your choice of present), but they'll be too polite to remind you. So you very rudely never keep your promise. Saying this in a card - or worse your e-card - is just as bad as saying 'I didn't want to buy you, so you're missing out this year, soz'.
3. A keyring
This is worse than socks. It's nearing the thoughtlessness of a pocket 2015 diary that you know your loved ones will never use, but it takes this to a whole new low. If you buy someone a novelty keychain, just know that whatever their sense of humour they're going to hate it just as much as you do. But if you want to get them a keyring they might actually like, you should check out our list of the top keyring gadgets which are significantly better than those stupid little ones with quotes about mums, dads, or brothers and sisters on them…
And that's it. Hopefully you've found something here to treat your loved ones with. Just… don't be a Scrooge ok? No matter what your budget is, get something that's good value and then everyone's happy. Don't forget, you can find loads more ideas over on our blog.
