Striking a balance

I've been told countless times just how important this final school year is when it comes to working hard. But how do you find a balance between school work and a social life?

In the past I think sometimes I've been too fixed on having a social life, but finding I couldn't because my friends were at home revising. It's something I've been thinking about a lot recently - what with so many 18th birthdays coming up this year. The majority of people I know have aspirations and want to succeed through school and university, so perhaps this year school work will have to come first.

A friend of mine recently broke up with her boyfriend as he told her she was 'too school-orientated', a comment which I thought was unjust. Dreams of careers in medicine require plenty of hard work to fulfil, and I really respect her for putting her dreams before her social life.

Luckily for me, my current workload is not too challenging and I'm managing to get my work done whilst still having time to myself. However as the year goes on, I can definitely see myself having to make sacrifices - spending less time with 140 characters on Twitter, and more with 1,000 word essays. While I may find this hard at first, I just need to remember my goal: My university of choice with a fantastic course, and, in the long-run, the career I desire.

And hey, I can still go out with my friends as long as I remember that work needs to be my priority.
