Wolverhampton Council cuts domestic violence charity funding

Council funding to a charity that helps victims of domestic violence in Wolverhampton will end next month.
A £50,000 parachute payment is set to help the group over the initial six-month period.
The Haven has benefited from an annual £175,000 grant from the authority which has helped staff provide help and accommodation to women and children made homeless as a result of abusive relationships.
Popinder Kaur, The Haven's head of business development, said the cut was 'particularly disappointing' for the group as they had worked with the council for three years on a plan that would have seen the refuge running without government funding.
It would also have seen The Haven take over 103 Salop Street in an asset transfer, moving away from local authority funding and setting up social enterprises, with all of their prevention work run from one building to reduce costs.
The site is now part of the council's Westside regeneration project.
Last year the charity provided a home to 242 women and assisted 313 others and more than 500 children in the community.
The funding cut is due to be formalised by the council's cabinet resources panel on Tuesday.
