The iconic image of Eva Peron as she made her last address to the people of Argentina in 1951 was recreated in Wolverhampton today ahead of a performance of the musical Evita in the city.

The hit musical will be at Wolverhampton's Grand Theatre next month.

It will star former Wet Wet Wet singer Marti Pellow, who takes on the role of narrator Ché. Madalena Alberto will be playing the role of Eva Peron.

As part of the preparations for the show Grand theatre worker Laura Turner dressed in a replica Christian Dior gown, jewels and with arms outstretched at the top of the Lichfield Street theatre. Evita tells the tale of the wife of Argentine dictator Juan Peron and follows her journey from humble beginnings to become one of the most revered women in the country.

Kate Evans, spokeswoman for the Grand Theatre, said: "Evita is such an iconic show.

"One of the reasons why we recreated this balcony scene today is because it is the anniversary of the death of Eva Peron.

"She died on July 26, 1952. Her iconic appearance on the Casa Rosada balcony in 1951 was one of her last public speeches before her death in 1952.

"The scene in the musical is so iconic and well-known. Evita is one of the biggest shows to feature in our programme this year.

"We had quite a crowd gather when we recreated the famous scene from the balcony today, lots of people had their cameras out ready to take pictures."

The musical, which was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, includes songs such as Don't Cry For Me Argentina, On This Night of A Thousand Stars and Another Suitcase in Another Hall.

Evita will be at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre from August 19 to 31.
