100-year-old woman living in same Wolverhampton care home as her daughter reveals secret to long life

She maintains her independence fantastically well and looks half her age despite reaching the milestone.

A Wolverhampton woman who is living in the same care home as her daughter has revealed her secret to a long life - and its not what you might expect.

Clarice Walker, who likes to be known as Sal, has celebrated being 100 years young today (November 3) surrounded by family and friends.

Sal is a resident at Verona Court, rented housing with extra care in Wolverhampton, alongside her daughter who lives in the same complex. She maintains her independence fantastically well and looks half her age despite reaching the milestone.

Sal was born in 1926 in Catherine's Cross Darlaston and attended Prestwood Road school. She married George in 1949 and he passed away in 2014. She loved to dance the foxtrot and take part in sequence dancing with George at Goodyears pavilion and church halls.

She had 3 brothers and 3 sisters, her youngest sister Brenda is 92 and still alive. Janet, her daughter, was born in 1951 and is now 75.

Sal’s daughter Jan commented on the age her mom has reached: “It’s incredible. My dad passed away. My partner passed away, and we've just come here together, and it's the best.”

Since reaching the milestone she has received a card from the King congratulating her.

Care worker Gemma said: “Sal is an absolute pleasure to support. She is funny, straight to the point and fiercely independent. Every now and then, she’ll say something like, “I couldn’t do this without you,” when, in actual fact, she has no idea just how much joy she brings to the carers around her. Supporting Sal is an absolute privilege, and she never fails to put a smile on our faces.

“When I first met Sal and her daughter, Janet, as Care Manager, one of their greatest dreams was to live together so they could spend precious time with one another, rather than having to rely on a phone call. I am so incredibly pleased that we have been able to play a part in making that dream a reality.

“It is not every day that you have the privilege of supporting a mother and daughter, particularly when they are the glorious ages of 74 and 100! What a truly special relationship and an incredible milestone to celebrate.”

Sal shared her advice to young people regarding how they can reach 100. She said: “We have a whiskey every night.”
