Wolverhampton cabbie wins taxi hero award after helping mom-to-be reach hospital just in time

Tanveer Ahmad Mohammed Bibi has been recognised with an award.

A journey to hospital became a race against time for a Wolverhampton-based taxi driver who helped a pregnant woman get there just in time for the birth of her baby.

Tanveer Ahmad Mohammed Bibi has now been recognised for helping the woman reach the maternity ward after she went into labour, with her waters breaking shortly before they arrived.

Competing against over 1,700 nominees nationally, he has been named the West Midlands regional winner of the Acorn Taxi Hero Award.

Acorn Insurance, the UK’s largest taxi insurance specialist, launched the awards to celebrate the unsung heroes of Britain’s taxi industry – drivers who demonstrate exceptional acts of bravery, kindness and dedication for their passengers and communities, often without receiving the recognition they deserve.

According to his nomination, the passenger’s waters broke just before they reached the maternity ward. Tanveer completed the journey in time for her to receive care at the hospital, to the relief of her family.

The experience illustrates how an everyday taxi journey can suddenly become an important moment in a passenger’s life.

Tanveer’s nomination highlights the responsibility drivers can find themselves taking on when passengers need urgent assistance, and the difference a calm, safe journey can make at a critical time.

Tanveer said: “I’m delighted to have been named the West Midlands Taxi Hero. When I realised my passenger was so close to giving birth, the most important thing was to get her to the hospital safely and as quickly as I could.

“I was very relieved that we reached the maternity ward in time, and it meant a lot to know her family were happy and grateful.

“I’m proud to receive this recognition and to represent the West Midlands in the national awards.”

Ash Coakley, head of taxi insurance at Acorn Group, said: “Taxi drivers are often at the heart of their communities, and Tanveer’s experience shows how an ordinary journey can become something much more important.

“When his passenger needed to reach maternity care urgently, Tanveer helped ensure she arrived safely and just in time. It must have been a tense journey for everyone involved, and the family’s gratitude says a great deal about what his help meant to them.

“Tanveer’s story is a reminder of the care and responsibility taxi drivers show when passengers need them most. He’s a thoroughly deserving West Midlands Taxi Hero and exactly the kind of person these awards were created to recognise.”

The winners were selected by a judging panel drawn from the taxi and insurance sectors.

Tanveer will receive a £100 Amazon gift card and is in the running for the national title, with the overall winner set to receive a £1,000 Amazon gift card and the inaugural Britain’s Taxi Hero trophy.

The national winner will be announced on Wednesday, November 11.
