“The call was for an episode of a gentleman who the various crews managed to calm down in the rear of the ambulance.
“The side door of the ambulance was kept open while crews dealt with him. The police acted in a very calming and professional way - at one point five police cars were in attendance”.
Staffordshire Police has now confirmed the nature of the incident.
The force said in a statement: “We were called at 7.20am on Saturday (30 May) to a supermarket on Leathermill Lane in Rugeley following reports of possible public order offences.
“A man was acting erratically in the store. An ambulance and Midlands Air Ambulance attended the scene.
“The man was taken to hospital by ambulance after experiencing a medical episode. We left the scene at short time later.”
West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to an incident at an address on Leathermill Lane in Rugeley at 7.42am and sent an ambulance and the Midlands Air Ambulance to the scene.
“On arrival crews found a man in a serious condition, he was treated and conveyed to New Cross Hospital by land ambulance under emergency driving conditions.”
