'The joy of watching the English Women's rugby team' - Your Letters: September 12
PICTURE FROM THE ARCHIVE: ‘Hawne Colliery, Halesowen, had a country cottage look with its wooden fence, lawns and rose beds when seen from the road - but down in the earth the work was hard, dirty, and dangerous,’ reads the caption on this early 20th century picture from the Express & Star archive.

WOMEN'S RUGBY AN INSPIRATION
Sport has always been good for me both physically and mentally and no-one should be exempt. I have tried most sports from football and rugby through squash and tennis. I even ran in the English schoolboys cross-country championships where I finished somewhere in the middle although I was a couple of years younger than the average.
In my late 40s and early 50s I used to get up at 6am and run 18 miles in a time that would have given me a three hour marathon, it carried me through a very tough time. These days post 14 hour heart attack, both hips replaced and bronchial asthma I watch rather than take part.
Luckily rugby has always been my favourite sport so I have the joy of watching the English Women's rugby team. They obviously know their game inside out and to call them a team is an understatement. Their driving scrums are a thing of beauty.
It would be brilliant if when they give up rugby they entered politics. No blaming others if things go wrong, always giving their all for their country and working as a world beating team. We can but dream.
