Peter Rhodes on reforming the police, a bestseller under fire and a lesson from Dickens

I reported a few days ago on sightings of people who, having read Raynor Winn's bestselling travel book, The Salt Path, are hiking around the coastal paths of the South-West, slogging along in breathless imitation of Winn and her ailing husband, Moth. Bad news, folks. Things may not be quite as they seem.

The Observer has given Winn and Moth a thorough monstering, alleging lies, deception and embezzlement. All will be revealed in time but it does seem odd that a couple should embellish the facts to such an extent. Or did it never occur to them that people from their troubled past might be tempted to blow the whistle? Or that headline writers would have a field day with their book's title? “Hit book you may have to take with a pinch of salt,” sneers the Daily Mail.

I won't be offended if you skip this next bit. I admit my long-running saga with BT over the Full Fibre switchover is not exactly riveting. But it does show how bureaucracy never changes.
