Julie Walters' views on being 61 deserve a pinch of salt, writes Peter Rhodes.

The star declares: "Age gives you permission to be who you are, and that's liberating."

Oh, please.

We sixtysomethings may be fitter than any generation of our age in history but every year is still a step closer to the final trumpet call.

Not one of us, in full possession of his or her marbles, wouldn't gladly swap 61 for 41.

When Julie Walters and others gush about "embracing our age," they should always add that it's what we do because we don't have any damn choice in the matter.
