Star comment: Decision to cut Marines an outrage

It is unbelievable that the Government is cutting the Royal Marines and withdrawing 42 Commando from frontline duties.

The reason given for this outrage is said to be 'funding shortages'.

But while the Ministry of Defence looks to axe 200 Marines, the country is splurging £14.4 billion on foreign aid.

That makes the UK the world's third biggest donor after the US and Germany.

This is despite repeated warnings of fraud and an emerging picture of lavish salaries in the overseas aid sector at the taxpayers' expense.

Has this country really lost all sense of perspective?

The Government risks damaging our military capabilities for the sake of lining the pockets of some countries that are little more than banana republics.

And a lot of the time we have have little to no idea where the money actually goes.

42 Commando is an elite unit that has served this country with distinction since the Second World War.

Its men put their lives on the line for this country and they face hellfire in the process.

It is a betrayal to those men on the front line that the suits in Whitehall act in this way from the comfort of their plush surroundings.

Theresa May has got off to a good start as Prime Minister.

Of course Brexit has dominated her time in Number 10 but she must not lose sight of what else is going on around her.

With tensions rising between the West and Russia, can we really afford to be slashing our Armed Forces in this way?

Foreign aid became something of a showpiece for David Cameron and Nick Clegg.

The pair liked to boast about how much they were doing for troubled nations whilst parading amongst Europe's social elite.

But while they were committing future Governments to spending taxpayers' money abroad they failed to see what was happening back at home.

Ridiculously our foreign aid budget rocketed by over £1bn because of EU regulations that classed drugs and prostitution as part of economic output – failing of course to understand that the Exchequer gets no tax receipts for these illegal activities.

If Mrs May does one worthy thing in office it would be to reduce our foreign aid bill.

Why are we insistent about putting those who seek to exploit our generosity first before the interests of the Best of the Best?
