'Unrelenting' abuser jailed for attacking woman and holding her hostage
The man admitted abusing a woman over an extended period
A man has been jailed for more than five years after abusing a woman in Staffordshire over an extended period.
The woman was dragged into a vehicle and assaulted by Nathan Bate in 2023.
On another occasion Bate, of Caerphilly, Wales, assaulted her and prevented her from attending A&E.
In May the same year, the victim was again assaulted by Bate in a vehicle.
On that occasion the victim escaped onto Silverdale Road in Newcastle-under-Lyme, before being convinced to re-enter the vehicle.
The victim was then held hostage by Bate, who strangled her in her own home.
Bate was arrested in June and denied the offences in interview, but later admitted what he had done in court.

On Friday (October 16) bate was sentenced to five years and five months in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court for coercive control, false imprisonment and intentional strangulation.
PC Deni Street of the Newcastle-under-Lyme local policing team said: “Bate was unrelenting in pursuing and controlling the victim who suffered immeasurable harm from his abuse.
“The survivor showed immense courage in coming forward to us and sharing what she had been through, so we could gather a significant amount of evidence against Bate which led to him pleading guilty in court.
“I hope the sentence goes someway in comforting the survivor and that she can continue to rebuild her life knowing Bate is serving a custodial sentence.”
