People living in New Hampton East and New Hampton West, in Whitmore Reans, have welcomed council plans to introduce traffic-calming measures to the "dangerous" stretch of road.

Wolverhampton Council gave notice to residents this week that it intends to add a number of road humps and flat-topped pedestrian crossings to make the area safer.

Residents say the plans are "much needed" and that "they should be installed years ago".

Tracy Noble, 54, or New Hampton East, said: "Honestly I think it's a great idea, in the day time it's not so bad, but in the night cars speed down here.

"It will make the street safer, I actually think they should have installed them years ago. I know some people don't like them, but if you are going the right speed they won't have any effect on your car will they?"

The council has said it will introduce 15 sets of 75mm high-speed cushions between the junction of the A41 Tettenhall Road and Walpole Street and two sets of flat-top raised pedestrian crossings between the two junctions.

Adam Cartwright, 43, of Whitmore Reans, said: "I have nearly been taken out on that road. It can be quite dangerous, I think it's about time the council do something about it.

"At the moment it isn't too bad, but when it gets later you do sort of take your life in your own hands. They're much needed, I won't have any issues with it."

Residents have been given until August 11 to voice any opinions by writing to Wolverhampton Council.

Alternatively, a copy of the proposed traffic-calming measures will also be made available to view during normal office hours at the main reception at Wolverhampton Civic Centre on St Peter's Square, Wolverhampton.
