Carriageway reopens with delays after two men taken to hospital after M6 crash involving lorry, van and cars
A busy section of motorway was closed for several hours after a lorry and a van were involved in a crash on the M6 near the junction with the M5, with emergency service crews attended.
The collision also involving three cars happened on the northbound carriageway between Junction 8 near the M5 exit slip road at Tamebridge and Junction 9 at Wednesbury at about 6.25am today (Wednesday).
A National Highways West Midlands spokesman said the incident was then followed by an oil spillage, thought to be from the heavy goods vehicle involved in the crash.
As a result of the incident traffic was held, resulting in 10-mile queues from Gravelly Hill at Junction 6 in Birmingham.
"There were two separate incidents being dealt with," the spokesperson said. "There was a collision between a heavy goods vehicle and a car, then an oil spillage.
"The vehicle is being recovered and the road is expected to reopen at about 8.30am.
"There will be residual delays, but it will clear soon."
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a multi-vehicle road traffic collision on the M6 northbound near junction 8, Walsall at 6.24am.
"Two ambulances and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene where, on arrival, crews found three cars, a lorry and a van had been involved in a collision.
"Two men were treated for injuries not believed to be serious and conveyed to Walsall Manor Hospital."
At around 6.25am National Highways West Midlands reported a "collision involving multiple vehicles".
West Midlands Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service personnel attended.
The roads authority initially warned of 90-minute delays and approximately six miles of congestion, with recovery and collision clear-up work and the carriageway reopened just after 8.52am, with seven miles of congestion reported.
