Free Saturday parking for Christmas shoppers announced for Staffordshire town
Shoppers heading into Tamworth in the run-up to Christmas will be able to park for free on three Saturdays this December, as the borough council launches its annual festive parking giveaway.
Tamworth Borough Council has confirmed that all authority-run car parks will be free to use on December 6, 13 and 20 in a bid to boost footfall and encourage people to shop local during one of the busiest retail periods of the year.
Councillor Nova Arkney, the council’s portfolio holder for infrastructure and the local economy, said the move was designed to support businesses and make festive trips into town that little bit easier.
“Supporting our businesses is so important, especially at this busy time of year,” she said. “By offering free parking across the three Saturdays leading up to Christmas, we hope to make it easier for people to shop, dine and enjoy the festivities in the town centre.
“We want residents and visitors to make the most of the season, explore the markets, visit Tamworth Castle and experience the festive fun across the town.”
A packed programme of Christmas attractions is set to fill the town centre throughout December, including a festive village, seasonal film screenings, Santa shows, variety performances, party nights and craft markets taking place in Ankerside Shopping Centre.
Tamworth Castle will also be open on each of the free-parking Saturdays, offering family-friendly festive events such as Santa’s Christmas Castle and the popular Santa Paws sessions for pet lovers.
The council has reminded visitors that the free parking offer applies only to Tamworth Borough Council-operated car parks, and does not extend to Ankerside, Tamworth Station, Namco or the Snowdome.
