M6 reopens following two lane closure and 40 minute delays due to spillage
Delays of up to 40 minutes were reported due to a spill on the M6.
A stretch of the M6 has reopened following an earlier fuel spillage and broken down car that caused more than 40 minutes of delays and seven miles of congestion.
Delays of at least an hour remain on the M6 between Junction 13 (Stafford) and Junction 13 (Cannock), following the spill on the road at around 12pm today.
Earlier today, National Highways West Midland warned of heavy delays in the region, closing two of four lanes of the busy route.
The highways group said: "Two lanes (of four) are closed on the M6 south between J13 Stafford & J12 Cannock following a broken down car & subsequent spillage.
"Our Traffic Officers are working to treat the spillage with specialist equipment en route 45 minute delay & approx. 7 miles congestion on approach."
The incident was first reported at around 12.22pm, with the group saying that specialist traffic officers were on the scene to assist in removing the spillage.
The route has now reopened; however, an hour of delays remains while congestion eases in the area.
A highways spokesperson said: "The scene is clear and all lanes are now OPEN on the M6 south between J13 Stafford & J12 Cannock following an earlier spillage.
"There are residual delays of at least 1 hour in the area; however, these delays should now start to ease."
An image from CCTV cameras near the spill shows highways staff working at the scene to remove the vehicle and clean the spillage.
Emergency services have been approached for more information.
