Queues of traffic built up around the town on the first day of works along Beaconside.

A one-way system is in place with the road closed to traffic heading towards the A34.

Tyrone Daly, manager of TD Service, the old Beaconside Tyres, today described the situation as a 'nightmare'.

"It is 100 per cent worse than normal," he said.

"It is pretty horrendous, the biggest worry is you get a blockage on the M6 and traffic gets diverted into Stafford, it will be gridlock."

Housebuilder Taylor Wimpey is building 250 homes at the Marston Grange development. Contractors will be replacing drains along the road.

Beaconside is closed to traffic heading in the direction of the A34 from the A518 Weston Road from Sandon Road junction.

Staffordshire County councillor, Mark Deaville, cabinet support member for transport, said: "Unfortunately some level of disruption is always inevitable when developments need to tie into the highway and connect the services that are so essential to life but we've worked very closely with Taylor Wimpey to make sure the work is done as efficiently as possible to minimise any inconvenience to drivers."
