Plan for £2m overhaul of A5 in Cannock
New details were released today about the £2 million overhaul of a major route through Cannock, which will mean a ban for traffic turning right off the A5.
Under the scheme, motorists will not be allowed to turn right from the A5 Watling Street to North Street, in Bridgtown – in an effort to reduce too-high levels of pollution.
It is hoped the move will stop traffic queuing at the busy junction. Signs and road markings encouraging drivers to take alternative routes would also be put in place.
The move is part of a scheme to cut the rate of nitrogen dioxide emissions, which has exceeded Government guidelines on the route for the past four years. Pollutants are also said to have been causing problems for people in the Longford and Churchbridge areas as well.
This new stage of the plan has gone out for public consultation and people have until December 31 to comment.
Cannock's head of environmental health Steve Shilvock said: "This has not been a straightforward process as the A5 is a trunk road with a strategic purpose for national and regional traffic. We need to smooth out the flow of traffic."
Cannock Chase Council has submitted two bids to the Local Enterprise Partnership for the £167,000 cost of implementing the right-turn ban.
