Is road chaos on the way?

This is a bird's eye view of a luxury housing development taking shape in Stafford which motorists fear will cause traffic mayhem in just over a week's time.

Construction work on King Edward Court, which is off the Newport Road, started in January and is due to be completed by the end of this year.

Housing developer David Wilson Homes is behind the scheme, which is creating 14 five and six-bedroom properties on the site.

The development has recently sparked controversy after the announcement that a stretch of the Newport Road will be closed to traffic for 10 weeks over the summer to allow the sewer system to be upgraded to cater for the extra homes.

Staffordshire County Council will make the most of the closure by carrying out road repairs and allowing work to be carried out to lay electricity cables and replace gas pipes under the road at the same time.

It was revealed last week that roadworks between Kingsway and West Way would affect just 30 to 40 metres of the A518 at a time – but through traffic will be diverted 27 miles out of its way.

Councillors, residents and motorists have been appalled at the scale of the closure of the major commuter route, fearing it will "paralyse" half the town as drivers seek to find alternative ways into and out of Stafford.

But David Wilson Homes has defended the work, saying it will provide two new sewers for the area.

Spokeswoman Marie Carter said: "They are being put in primarily to serve the King Edward Court development but, on completion, they will also benefit other residents by easing a historic flooding issue on the existing Severn Trent drainage network. Other utilities will also take the opportunity to carry out essential repairs, including Central Networks, Transco and Severn Trent Water.

"It is beneficial for this to be done during the summer holiday period as traffic flow at peak times is proven to be reduced during the summer months.

"David Wilson Homes is sorry for any inconvenience caused and will try to get this work completed as quickly and smoothly as possible."

Detached five-bedroom homes at King Edward Court will be on sale from £466,950.

Regional sales director Jenny Clarke said: "Situated within an affluent area of Stafford, King Edward Court is perfect for those looking for a spacious and elegant property in which to nurture a growing family." She said two properties had been sold already and there had been strong interest.
