Six arrested in Birmingham as police dog locates machete and fireworks

All six remain in police custody

Six people were arrested in the Small Heath area of Birmingham after a machete and fireworks were detected by a police dog.

The blade and fireworks were found in Muntz Street, Small Heath, at around 5.45pm yesterday (October 31).

West Midlands Police said police dog Raff tracked the illegal items.

Two men aged 20 and 19 and four teenagers aged 17, 16, 15 and 14 were all arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article.

The six remain in police custody today.

Enhanced Section 60 stop and search powers were not in force in Muntz Street last night but nearby areas in Sparkbrook were subject to these conditions, as were Birmingham city centre and an area around Soho Road.

Section 60 powers allow police to stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds.

In a separate incident last night seven people were arrested as police responded to “pockets of disorder” in the city centre while the Section 60 powers were in place.

The enhanced powers were granted following several incidents involving knives in Birmingham including a fatal stabbing in Coventry Road, Small Heath on Wednesday (October 28).

A 46-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Abdillahi Farid Ali.
